Answer engine optimization (AEO): how to become the answer

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that search engines, voice assistants and AI tools can use it as the direct answer to a question. It covers featured snippets and “People also ask” boxes on Google, answers read out by voice assistants, and the answers written by AI search tools.

AEO overlaps with SEO and with generative engine optimization (GEO). The common thread is simple: find the questions your customers ask, and answer them better and more clearly than anyone else.

Why AEO matters for service businesses

Many searches are questions: how much something costs, how long it takes, whether a service is available in a certain area, what the difference is between two options. When your page gives the clearest answer, you are more likely to be shown, quoted or recommended, even when the customer does not click straight away.

Step 1: find the questions

  • List the questions customers ask before they buy: on calls, on WhatsApp, by email and in meetings.
  • Look at the “People also ask” questions Google shows for your main services.
  • Check the queries in Google Search Console that are phrased as questions.
  • Group the questions by service and by stage: research, comparison, decision.

Step 2: answer first, then explain

Put a short, direct answer immediately under the question, in two or three sentences. Then add the detail, the exceptions and an example. This suits busy readers, and it gives search engines and AI tools a clear passage to use.

Step 3: use structure that makes answers easy to find

  • Use the question, or a close version of it, as a heading.
  • Use numbered steps for processes and bullet lists for options.
  • Use a table when comparing prices, sizes, plans or features.
  • Keep one main question per section, so each answer can stand on its own.

Step 4: add structured data where it is eligible

Structured data helps search engines understand a page, but it must describe content that is visible to visitors. Since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for a small group of authoritative government and health websites, so FAQ markup will not create extra search features for most businesses. Clear question-and-answer content on the page is still valuable. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product and Breadcrumb markup remain useful where they apply.

Step 5: make local answers consistent

For “near me” and area questions, answer engines rely on consistent business details. Keep your Google Business Profile complete, use the same name, address and phone number everywhere, and describe the areas you genuinely serve.

An example from transport and logistics

A refrigerated transport company might receive the same five questions every week: which temperatures it can hold, which vehicle sizes it has, which routes it covers, how quickly it can collect, and how to get a quote. Answering each one clearly on the relevant service page, with the company’s real capabilities, helps customers decide faster and gives search engines a precise answer to show.

How to measure AEO

  • Track impressions and clicks for question queries in Google Search Console.
  • Check whether your pages appear in featured snippets or “People also ask” for your priority questions.
  • Watch for visits from AI tools in your analytics.
  • Notice whether new enquiries are better informed and ask fewer basic questions.

The limits of AEO

Search engines decide which answer to show, and the choice can change. AEO improves your chances by making your content the clearest and most trustworthy answer; it cannot guarantee a featured snippet or an AI citation.
